Blog 11 - Monday, October 23, 2017

A HOT and CONTROVERSIAL topic last week in the province of Quebec has been about the adoption of BILL 62.

Bill 62 is a law that BANS  facial coverings for anyone giving or receiving public services in the province — this includes in places of business, hospitals, libraries, even on public transit.

What is your opinion on this issue?
Should a LAW telling people how to dress be enforced?
Would you like to see a DRESS CODE at St. Thomas High School?

Explain.

  1. What do i think about BILL 62?
I think that our school should have a dress code but should not be as strict as they are in some scenarios. What i mean by that is if someone is wearing ripped jeans, personally, you don’t have the right to tell someone “stop wearing those pants”. You have the right to express yourself in any way you want. Facial coverings are ok for some religions but that law should and should not be reinforced.

    2. I agree that we shouldn't be stopped from wearing the clothes we want to wear.

  2. I think that BILL 62 is a politically incorrect law. In some religions women aren't allowed to show there faces. So if they want to go to the hospital or use the bus or train to get around they cant. That law should be changed. I don't think that would should have anymore dress codes at St. Thomas High School.

  3. I think bill 62 is a dumb law with the amount of immigrants we get and since I'm surrounded by Arab family i know that some people in different culture cover their face because of their religion.it should not be enforced like i said before some people are not allowed to show their face.we have a dress code we cannot have anything vulgar or inappropriate and mostly it is followed

    1. I totally agree with you. St Thomas does do a good job following our dress code that we have now!

    2. I forgot you're Arabic, I bet you do see a lot of people with their faces covered

    3. I'm also Arabic I agree!

  4. I think this is not a good law to enforce because some religious people aren't allowed to go anywhere public without covering their faces and that kinda takes away their right to freedom. I definitely think that there shouldn’t be a law telling people how to dress. Some people express themselves through clothing and if they put a law telling people how to dress, then they can’t do that. As long as people don’t wear crazily inappropriate stuff, I would not like to see a dress code in St. Thomas because like I said before, some people express themselves through clothing.

  5. I think that BILL 62 should not be enforced. I think this because I don't think that we should have a law on what we can or can not wear. I would not like to see a dress code at St.Thomas because this way we can wear whatever we want like comfortable clothes, while if we do have a dress code we might not like it and it will probably be very uncomfortable.

  6. My opinion is that they shouldn’t band any facial coverings, because it is a part of their religion and they have the right to participate in their religion. All women can express themselves in their own way. A law should not be able to tell any human being how to dress or express themselves. We already have a dress code at our school, but it’s not very strict. I already don’t like the fact that we can’t wear shorts, since we don’t have air conditioning in our school. So if they made it any more strict, i’m not sure how i would react.

  7. I think they should reveal their faces to people that the're serving. I think that because if they are a wanted criminal or something like that, their boss could get arrested for working with a criminal, or other consequences. but people who have a religion could be excepted, just in case their boss could take a quick photo of them without their face covering to make sure the're not a criminal. We already have a simple and tiny dress code at St. Thomas, I just think we should reinforce it, I still see a lot of people with ripped jeans, shorty shorts, spaghetti straps etc... It should be reinforced because it is inappropriate sometimes, but ripped jeans aren't inappropriate in some cases. The rip obviously can't be on the private parts but it could be on the shins or knees, it's easier just to say no ripped jeans then specifying the cases where you're aloud and where you're not aloud to have the rip.

    1. I agree that people should not cover their faces when giving or receiving public services because we need to be able to identify who they are, to see their facial expressions and to hear correctly what they are saying. I also find it sad if someone is forced to have their face covered all the time.

  8. Bill 62... It is a law which stops anyone to have any facial coverings. It is a "hot" topic because people realize that some religions force people to cover their face, which is causing them.
One thing people are not thinking about is that most of other countries are doing the same which is why immigrants come here so they can do the "illegal" act in other countries. For Example France Banned all Religious Items in schools, and the European court of human rights also states that Most religious symbols are from SLAVERY. (Or at least most ones that cover the face) Imagine If "sub" teacher walked into the classroom with a Face covering object it would be suspicious. Just think about it makes a terrible impression on the school because it might be a criminal in disguise but how would you know? The Other side is that 0.001 of people who DEPEND on the hiding of there faces. It would hurt them so much maybe even to suicide. Its like if you lost both your parents because of a law and everything you own and know. #Feelsbad

  9. My opinion on this law is that it is both stupid and smart, the smart thing is that some people are scared when a person covers their whole face, and the stupid part is that its a part of religion so they should be allowed to wear what they want. I don't think the law should be enforced because people like to express themselves using their clothing and if people want to cover up there face they should be able to because the people that are affected by the BILL 62 should have the freedom to express themselves they want. I think that we should not have a dress code, for the reason that people should be able to express themselves even if it's through a pair of ripped jeans or any kind of clothing. honestly, I think its pretty stupid that dress codes are a thing in some schools because everyone looks the same while wearing their uniform and we should all dress the way we want to dress.

  10. In my opinion, I feel like this law should not be enforced. People should be allowed to have the right to dress however they want, and there shouldn’t be people telling them how to dress. It’s also quite stupid that some people feel scared by a piece of clothing, and that there should be a law put in place to stop it. I don’t think there should be a dress code at St-Thomas, but I think it people should still dress appropriately.

  11. The banning of facial coverings is currently a public debate in the province of Quebec. There are two opinions, the people who want facial coverings banned and others that don’t want it banned. In my opinion, facial coverings shouldn’t be enforced. People have the right to wear whatever they want to wear. They should be able to give or receive public services while wearing their facial coverings. Even with all the power the government has, they still have to respect that some people wear facial coverings. I wouldn’t want a dress code at St.Thomas although people shouldn’t dress inappropriately.

  12. I understand that people are scared of other people dressed like that, but they dress like that because of their religion. The law should not be telling them how to dress. It is not their fault that their religion tells them to wear that. The government is not being very fair. I also understand that some people think that they are dangerous but the government is wrong because what they do on their own personal time is their business but for security purposes it looks sketchy when you walk in a bank or through security or at the airport covered up. That is my opinion on Bill 62.

  13. I think bill 62 is smart because this is Quebec and we all have the right to be us and we shouldn't need to wear for example a mask covering your face and your life we should all be allowed to be who we want and not wear something according to religion .If I had to choose to have a dress code here at st Thomas I would say no because in elementary I needed to wear blue red or white and they were very spécifique and I found it hard to look for not blue navy blue clothes and medium red and white clothes , I think it's also a lot more of a stress than just normal every day clothes .Oh and one more thing if you saw someone in the street veering a big thing covering on there face would you be happy that there following there religions or not happy and abiT disaponted that they won't think about changing #billlll$62

  16. I think the bill is good and bad, it is good for the people who have to wear something they don't want to it gives them the freedom of doing what they want. It is bad though like the people who really believe in their religion it restricts them from following their beliefs and it could make them or family mad. I also think that there is a dress code at St-Thomas, but there's not really one for boys luckily but this morning I saw a teacher (one who was really mean to me before) took a girl away because her shirt was one inch too small and made her wear a baggy phys ed shirt, it's not fair to me because people should be able to dress how they like.

  17. I think that bill 62 is bad because you dont need to see everybodys face everywhere you go.I think that the law shouldnt be telling us what do do with our clothing because we have the right do dress as we want.I think there should be a dress code for st thomas but only for innapropriate clothes.

  18. I think that Bill 62 should not be enforced because people should be able to wear what the want because that is their way of expressing themselves. I think there should be a dress code and there shouldn't at St Thomas. I think there should be a dress code because for example if there wasn't some people would be showing to much. Also I don't think that ripped jeans should not be against the dress code because it is a sense of style.

  20. I believe the law 62 is not completely stupid because there are people who do crime wearing face masks. But it could've been implemented differently like people with a sufficiently bad record of crime would not be allowed to where them. I think that if they chose that it would be more of an ethical decision. In general I do not agree with the law

  21. So what do I think about the dress code? Well I think that St. Thomas should NOT have a dress code because to me, being able to wear what you want (not wearing anything inappropriate) is like being able to express your style! Your style is unique and you should not let anyone change that! I disagree with the law because in some religions, you can’t show your whole face. So, I think it’s a super rude thing to do and it should stop.

  22. I don't believe Bill 62 will help Canada. As Canadians, we have the right to wear what we want. We also have the right to practice any religion we want. In certain religions, you are supposed to wear a certain piece of clothing that may cover your face. I also don't agree with the "clarified" or "modified" version they came up with. The new version is that people have to uncover their faces when speaking to someone who works in a public place. I think St. Thomas should have a stricter dress code. Having a dress code stops bullying and "clicks" from forming. It also makes it harder to tell the difference between a poorer family and a wealthier family.

  23. I believe that a law which does not allow facial coverings for anyone giving or receiving public services is a good idea because people should be able to see your face, be able to identify who you are and if you in fact match the photo on your identification. When individuals wear masks people also tend to feel more afraid, insecure and apprehensive because they cannot see the person’s face or their facial expressions. This law does not tell people that they cannot wear face coverings at all times, only when giving or receiving public services. There are certain laws however, which tell people what to wear and are necessary in our society, for example the fact that individuals cannot go around nude or women topless. I am happy that at St Thomas a strict uniform is not enforced because we can dress more comfortably. However, I agree with the fact that revealing clothes are not permitted because sometimes kids can pick inappropriate things to wear for their age. #Bill62
