The borough of Hampstead adopted a new by-law where SMOKING is BANNED!
People residing or visiting this borough are not allowed to smoke on the street, sidewalks, parks, buildings, anywhere!
If caught, fines will start at $250.00
What do you think of this by-law?
Should more boroughs adopt this by-law?
What sort of impact will it have on the present? future?
Explain.
I think a lot of people will be smoking in there house and will cause worse lung cancer. I think this because the smoke doesn't really go away, if they are in a closet by chance smoking. The smoke will stay all they would be inhaling would be smoke. I think this by-law could kill more because they would be forced too smoke in small areas that will make them inhale all the smoke again and kill them. I think they shouldn't do more boroughs like this because it makes it worse.

DeleteIf people smoke when they know it causes cancer then it is better they do it at home instead of around other people who can get cancer smelling their secondhand smoke.
DeleteInteresting point

I think that its not the best idea to be smoking too much and if people start making it not legal it will reduce the amount of smokers ,they will start to maybe realize that its not to great for them and even though the smoke still might affect them at least it's making them aware and maybe will save their life and not teach there younger ones to do that .I know that there will always be people that won't quit but I think its just a bit mean by only giving them small spaces to smoke though .
ReplyDeleteHopefully it will reduce the amount of smokers. Great blog:)
DeleteThat's Very Similar to what I am saying! Good Blog!
DeleteI agree that it will reduce the amount of smokers. Great blog!
DeleteI think that this is a law that should be brought in to many more places in the future. This will affect many things in the future. Not only will it improve the health of people, it will also reduce polluting the air quality. I think that in the future, this will be a law that will be put because more and more people are doing it in 2018 including teenagers.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point! It will reduce air pollution. Great blog!
DeleteI believe this law is able to be spread to enough places to *almost* remove smoking. Many, many, many more places your adopt this law. It preserves peoples bodies to a better condition. Some Richer people might just give up that 250 every time they are caught if determined enough. In the future people will probably stop smoking if other countries do the same.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think that this by-law should be spreaded. Some people die or get sick when they stop smoking. I don’t have anything against people that smoke, if they want to it’s their choice. I don’t think that more boroughs should adopt this law. I’m sure that in the future a lot more people will smoke especially weed, because it will soon be legal.
ReplyDeleteI think that this law is good and smart because it can help so many people who are getting sick from smoking. But if someone that did smoke goes to this borough this law can make some arguments and people will have to urge to smoke when they can't. The thing that I think isn't good about this is the fee, I think that the fine should be $250 that's a bit lots for smoking. It should be like $50-100 since smoking is so common.
ReplyDeleteI agree that 250 dollars is a lot of money!!
DeleteI think that this is a good law, but I wouldn’t bring it to anywhere else. Even thought I know that smoking is terrible for you, everybody has a choice. If they want to smoke then you should let them smoke. Of course it should only be in certain “smoking zones”. This law would have an impact on the future if it was brought to other places since certain places won’t always smell like cigarette aches.
ReplyDeleteI understand what you're saying, great blog Jenna!
DeleteIt's a good law and bad law. Good: Because smoking kills. It causes cancer and slowly kills you! Bad: Because even though they put a fine, people are still going to secretly smoke. Forcing people to not smoke is going to some how make them want to rebel. I think $250 is way too much! I would make it $100! In the future, I don't think much will change. Smoking is going to become like drug dealing. People are going to meet up in alleys and sell drugs and cigarettes. Maybe it's going to reduce smoking by a bit but there will definitely not be a massive change.
ReplyDeleteI think that this by-law makes sense, and I agree with it. I do think more boroughs should adopt this by-law, because as I said, it makes sense. Not only will this by-law have an impact on people that smoke, but also people that don’t smoke, also known as second-hand smokers. Almost half a million people die each year from smoking, but over forty thousand people die by second-hand smoking, meaning they don’t even smoke and they’re still being affected. In the future, forbidding smoking will reduce the amount of deaths, and the earth would be less polluted. There’d be less littering on the streets and the air would be a lot more healthy.
ReplyDeleteThe bylaw makes sense in my opinion. As for smoking we can't control what people will do. Plain and simple - Smoking is bad and can affect people's heath. I know far too many people who have died from smoking cigarettes and developed lung cancer. That being said, the bylaw will encourage people to smoke less and hopefully...it can make a difference. Second hand smoke is no better. Therefore, this borough is on the right track and I suspect that others will follow. The fines will help make people be aware of the consequence of doing so. As for the future - it's hard to tell but I can only hope that other boroughs do this too. The impact it will have is that the air will be less polluted.
ReplyDeleteVery well said Sarah!
DeleteGreat blog :)
The bylaw does make sense, but it should not be brought to any other place. Most people are going to do it anyways, and that is their decision, even though it might not be the right one. Smoking is very bad for your health, but people do it anyway because they believe it can relieve stress. If they do bring the law to other places, I don't think $250 will stop them. They are most likely going to have some illegally. Also if smoking becomes illegal, the air would be fresh and less polluted.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this new smoking bylaw in Hampstead and I wish they would pass the same law in more municipalities. If someone chooses to smoke and increase their risk of getting cancer, they should do it in their own home and not expose other people, especially children, to secondhand smoke. Plus, there are a lot of people who suffer from asthma and other lung diseases and cigarette smoke makes it difficult for them to breathe. I believe this law was also introduced because of the new law coming into effect this summer, where marijuana will be legalized. This will now limit where people will also be allowed to smoke marijuana, which smells as if there is a skunk that has sprayed. Yuck! Hopefully, by limiting where people can smoke, their addiction may lessen and it may make it easier for them to quit. #smokingcausescancer
