11 - ELEVEN school shootings in 2018
17 - SEVENTEEN deaths in the latest Florida shooting
16 - SIXTEEN more in critical condition and hospitalized
1 - WEAPON and SHOOTER
3,000 - THREE THOUSAND STUDENTS AFFECTED
129 - ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-NINE TEACHERS/STAFF AFFECTED
4 - FOUR KILOMETERS from where I stay in Florida
+ an infinite amount of other students, parents, teachers and staff scared of a repeat
Even though Canada and U.S.A. have VERY different GUN LAWS - does the latest shooting scare you? Does it make you think that something could happen here?
Do you believe WE do enough to prepare our students of a CODE RED?
What suggestions do you have?
Explain.
Yes, This Is Scary! I Couldn't imagine living near there and feeling how scared The people will get. I am Still surprised that there are no laws for no guns allowed in school districts unless with supervision. I Personally don't think it would happen here from all the different laws and precautions Canada Takes to keep a safe country even in the top 5 safest ones in the world. The CODE RED here is not as severe as other places, so schools don't need a preparation as large as more severe possibilities of a CODE RED.
ReplyDeleteYeah i agree that it’s not as scary living in Canada.
Deleteyess true
DeleteThat is very true. Great Blog!

ReplyDeleteI think that we do not have enough code red practices even though i feel safe and i don’t think there will be any shootings i think it would be better to have more practices. So far i only think we’ve had one and i don’t remember it. What about the people who were absent on that day they have never had a chance to practice and i think that’s unsafe.
ReplyDeleteI think we dont have enough also. Great blog!!!!
DeleteI really agree
DeleteI totally agree with you. Great blog!
DeleteI am always scared of one happening. Also with Félix le claire with a lot of gang members, they could start something with older kids and get in a fight. But other than that I feel pretty same at st tomas. I think we need to practice more so we can be more prepared if it actually does happen because some of us were absent on the day we practiced it. We need at least 4-5 a year.
ReplyDeleteI think we dont have enough also. Great blog!!
DeleteI agree, we should be more prepared just in case. GREAT BLOG NOAH JON!!!
DeleteI think that we do not have enough code red practices, even though I feel safe and I don’t think there will be any shootings. Also with Felix Le Claire with a lot of bad kids that our on gangs, they could start something with older kids and get in a fight. But either than that I think St Thomas is safe

ReplyDeleteI think that this is an important topic especially because this world doesn’t really get better by the day it gets better bye the moves and influences that we have on country’s people , races and Imagrints . This world we live in has no impact from one person so we can’t let little shootings get the most of us ,yes it’s sad but all we can do is move on and just worry about the next one because that’s why we should practice more code reds and things that happen Actually this happens every day and it really can’t stop you from exploring places and doing things you want to do because what those people want you to be is to be afraid to leave your home and not feel safe ,so what if we think canada is protected we have just as much chances of something to happen as the us or other targets .So we really should think more about that because if we don’t practice a lot we won’t really know what to do and we will panic so it really is important to maybe take more time to have plans and strategies if ever we do fall in this position.
ReplyDeleteThe latest shooting does scare me but also doesn't because since Canada and the U.S. have SUCH different gun laws it's unlikely for something like that to happen in Canada because of our gun laws. I don't think that the U.S. takes it very seriously because 11 shootings in 2 months is crazy and still nothing has happened to prevent that. As a school I don't think that we do enough because we just did one and everyone knew it was fake so some people were talking and some people didn't take it seriously. To make it better we should have some "real" ones meaning like in my elementary school we brang real police officers to pretend to have a lock down, they would bang on the doors and be like "this is the police open the door", "I am a student help me" so thar it was kind of real. But not to scare everyone they would have a assembly for grades kindergarten-4 so that they wouldn't be scared. They didn't really do anything for the kindergartners since they are in kindergarten. I think we don't think we are prepared if this actually happens
ReplyDeleteThaose are some good ideas.
DeleteI agree with all of and think that it is scary that 2094 people got shot to death in the USA from a gun in 2018.I think that we should definitely practice more CODE REDs because we only had one but I had originally forgot that we had one. I am not so scared that this will happen in Canada because it is the safest country in the world. #wrotethiswithmydog
ReplyDeleteYes the recent gun shooting does scare me. I think there a lot of ways to inform and educate the students at St-Thomas on how to react during a shooting. I think that we should have more drills. I also believe that we would be able to get more students to safety if the students on the first floor went out the windows and went across the street. Also, instead of just huddling in a group on the ground we should lock the door, then proceed to play dead. That way, if the shooter somehow gets in he might think we are already dead and move on.
ReplyDeleteI agree, there can be many ways to inform the students. Great blog! :)
DeleteI agree especially woth your idea about the students and staff on the first floor. Great blog
DeletePlaying Dead Wont Work... The Person There Would See 20-30 Students on the floor at the same time with no evidence that we are dead...
DeleteThe Florida shooting does scare me a bit because, even though it’s not likely, the same thing could happen to us here at St. Thomas. I think that every shooting that happens will affect the other schools more and more because it can happen to them. Honestly, I don’t think we do enough to prevent code red. I think that we should have practices every month or so so if a code red does happen, everyone will know exactly what to do because we’ve practiced it a lot of times. Also, I think that we should have an escape route from each place and classroom that’s in the school because we would know exactly where to go if a code red happens. In the beginning of the year, the teachers should take a period to explain to us what to do, where to go, and how to react during a code red.
ReplyDeleteHaving an escape room would be a great idea! Great blog Joyanne!
DeleteThe latest shooting scars me since where it took place is quite close to where me best friend is staying in Florida. But I do not think that the same thing will happen in Canada since we have very different laws. I think that in our school we should practice code reds a few more times a year. I also think that when there is a sub, they should be told what to do in case of a code red.
ReplyDeleteThe shooting does not scare me, I feel like I would get scared if it actually happened to me. I’m not scared because I know that the chances that we will have a shooting aren’t high. I do not believe that we practice enough, so far we have only have one practice this year. When we had the code red practice, I had a sub and she didn’t know what to do. We should have practices while we have subs or while we have recess and lunch, so we and the lunch ladies know what to do. If ever we did have a real code red with a different teacher or during recess, we should be prepared and know what to do.
ReplyDeleteI agree, we should have more practices during the year. Good blog.
DeleteI agree that we need to have more code red practices and that everyone in the school should know what to do, including substitutes, cafeteria staff, etc.
DeleteThe latest shooting scares me a bit because the Americans live right next to us so there can be a war between countries and it can affect us because America is right next to us.I dont think the same thing will happen in Canada because Canadians don't usually get in fights and our weapons that are tolerated are much less dangerous.I still think that the school should practice more than one code red because there is still a chance that there could be a crazy guy or a drunk guy who wanders in and tries to shoot us.
ReplyDeletei agree about the drunk guy
DeleteI don't understand the "war between countries" part but yes, since they're right next to us it could definitely happen to us.
Deleteit kind of scares me because i have family in Florida and they arent to far from where it happened it also doesnt i feel like it would be harder to do it in Canada but its still possible i feel like we dont do enough we should have a bodyguard per schoolor at least one person who can stop the shooter
ReplyDeleteThe last shooting did scare me, and all shootings make me concerned to be honest. I think that we have a lower possibility of having a school shooting here in Canada, but anything could happen. I think we don’t do enough to prepare students for a code red. We practise once a year, and I don’t think it’s sufficient. My suggestion is that we have more practises during the year (like at least 4 or 5) and prepare for real or possible situations, instead of just hiding at the back of the class.
ReplyDeleteThat would be a good idea to practice Code Red atleast 4 times a year.
DeleteGreat blog:)
I think we should practice Code Reds more often than we do. Great blog :)

ReplyDeleteOut of all the school shootings, this was the scariest for me. So many people have passed because of some horrible people. The people who cause these shootings are probably depressed, but I find that they went too far. This scared a lot of people including me. Every night I pray for those who have lost their lives. I hope that a disaster like this one in Florida never happens here because I have lots of family and friends that I love. I don't think that something like that would happen here because Canada is a safe country and I hope we can keep it that way. I do believe in Code Red and I suggest that we practice it more.
ReplyDeleteTrue this was pretty scary and there are some pretty horrible people..... I don't necessarily want to say "nice blog" or something cause It's not necessarily something "nice" to discuss if you get what I mean :/

DeleteI think that the story of the most recent school shooting is very school. What we might think is a fire drill could cost the life of our friends and our lifes. I am very happy that we live in Canada because it is a lot safer than America, but we are still not that safe. There should be more code red practices to make sure if an unfortunate event like this happens we are safe. Thank you for reading.
ReplyDeleteI think we should practice code red too! Great blog!
DeleteI don't know what is so school about a school shooting maybe you meant to say scary.
DeleteI agree we should have more code red practices
awesome blog Gabriel B
While the latest school shooting made me really sad, I have been scared of something like this happening, even in Montreal, since the shooting happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Connecticut, 5 years ago. Since then it seems as if all we hear about are other mass shootings like in Colorado, Las Vegas, Miami, etc. I think that while it is unrealistic to think that we can outlaw all guns, automatic rifles should be made illegal because there is no reason for someone to own one and we definitely need to make it more difficult for someone to get a gun. I also do not believe that teachers should have a gun in class. That would not make me feel safer. There should also be more discussion and help offered for people who have psychiatric issues and if someone reports a person they think is about to do something they should be taken very seriously. I also think that many of the school shooters are kids that have been bullied. I am not saying that it is right for them to take a gun and kill people but something needs to be done about bullying. Also, parents should be more involved in their kids’ lives and doing things as a family and they should limit the violent games their kids play. At my elementary school we began doing code reds right after the shooting at Sandy Hook. I believe we should be doing more code reds at St Thomas. The only one we had, I had a substitute that did not even know she had to lock the door. In my opinion, more schools, cinemas, concert and sports venues, etc. should also look into getting metal detectors and schools should put a large bullet proof closet in each classroom where students can hide. While this is scary to think about, it seems to be part of our life for now and it doesn’t help if we just close our eyes and do nothing. #staysafe
ReplyDeleteThe school shooting was very devastating and caused many deaths in United States of America, where there are less rules on owning a gun. Americans have way more guns than we do, however the people that will do a school shooting will be the people who illegally have possession of a firearm or other sort of weapon. For that reason I'm a bit scarred since there is a chance that happens over here in Canada. I strongly disagree that we should only have one code red practice during the school year. I disagree since there could be absents on that day witch was one of the few days I ever missed School. For that reason I would not know what to do in a code red. If ever that happens my life would be at a higher danger in case of a school shooting that would happen at ST-Thomas. I think it is ridiculous to have a bunch of fire alarm practices and only have one code red. Anyways I hope the school shooting has warned schools of the danger and more schools will take precautions about this very scary situation that could affect many people in case of code red. Finally like we discussed in English class every school should have a different way of saying code red since the shouters will know that if we say code red they will know people are still hiding around the school.
ReplyDeletePersonally I do wonder sometimes if this can or will happen to us, it could most definitely happen, but I’m just wondering who’s crazy enough to do it. It does kind of affect me and make me scared, especially since I have cousins scattered all across america. I’m only really scared of one of them getting hurt, hopefully they don’t. I don’t think the cool prepares us enough we only have one code red all year. Most people have already forgotten about it by now so they won’t know what to do if it actually happens. I think we should have minimum 5 or 6 per year so students always remember what to do if it happens.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same. We should have more drills so we can remember. Great blog Zach!
DeleteI feel like nobody is safe anywhere. At st. Thomas we have a little chance of a shooting but we still have to be prepared. The shooting scared/worried me because if someone is crazy enough to do it there, there might be someone crazy enough to do it here. Even with the different gun laws. I feel safe at st. Thomas. But, they probably felt safe at the school in Florida. I think we should have more than 1 or 2 code reds a year. During the time between each drill, people forget what to do. Nothing can really prepare us for an actual code red. There are many questions that float around in my head at this topic; “what if the attacker was a former student and knows about code reds?” , “ will it ever happen here?”, “are we prepared enough in case of a real shooting?”... I think even though nothing can prepare us, we should still practice more code red drills.
ReplyDeleteThe shooting was definitely a tragedy. I think 11 shootings so far in 2018 is disappointing. I think a lot of people thought that 2018 would be different. I think no one is never safe anywhere. I somewhat feel safe at Saint-Thomas. But, you never know what could happen. I'm not that scared. I think that we are a very safe country. I don't think we prepare enough. I'm sure that most students aren't 100 percent certain about what to do during a code red. We should have from 4-6 each year.
